Twenty-five Special Olympics traditional and Unified Sports® softball teams, representing 16 communities across the state, will compete at the 2014 Special Olympics Iowa State Softball Tournament at the Raccoon River Valley Park Softball Complex in West Des Moines on Saturday, August 2. Presented by Sammons Financial Group, the tournament will showcase the talents of over 350 Special Olympics athletes and Unified Sports® partners.
Unified Sports® teams join equal numbers of people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Teams are made up of people of similar age and ability levels. Unified Sports® promotes social inclusion through shared sports training and competitions experiences.
Teams from Ames, Atlantic, Belle Plaine, Boone, Carlisle, Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Creston, Davenport, Des Moines, Glenwood, Iowa City, Mason City, Muscatine, Sheldon, and Sioux City will travel to West Des Moines to participate in the tournament.
The tournament begins at 9:00 a.m. with the Opening Ceremony, featuring the ceremonial first pitch from Sammons Financial Group Associate Vice President Neil Berns and the recitation of the Special Olympics Athlete Oath, with the first games beginning on all five fields at 9:15 a.m. The final games of the day are scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m. The 2014 Special Olympics State Softball Tournament is open to the public and spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend.
