Nearly every day, I have people that approach me and want to talk about their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future. These topics range from starting a small business, to improving their family life, to getting a big promotion at work - just about anything. The one thing I’ve noticed that most if not all of these people have in common is a BIG BUT. In the middle of telling me about their ideal future, their story turns to BUT...; then the excuses start flowing. People are too busy; their boss doesn’t like them; they can’t get the financing they need; the list is endless.

Unlike Sir Mix-a-Lot, I am not a fan of “Big Buts”. There have been several times in my life when excuses could have served me well - we all have great excuses that are completely reasonable and rational and everyone understands and sympathizes. Get over it! I choose to never focus on WHY I CAN'T do something - and only focus on HOW I CAN. When you are busy making excuses, you are not making money, making friends, or making the world a better place. Every loser out there has an excuse as to why they’re not a winner – but at the end of the day, they’re still a loser with an excuse.

The long and short of the matter is that people don’t like to see themselves as failures. I’m here to tell you that if you have committed to doing something and don’t accomplish it – regardless of your excuse – you have failed yourself. The best advice that I can give you comes in two parts – first, be careful what you commit to. Always ensure that you have the time and energy and that the activity ties into your long-term personal goals. Second, always follow through – give it your all and I think you will be surprised by what you are able to accomplish.

And remember – if you don’t try, you will fail 100% of the time!
