The Kansas City Royals announced that manager Ned Yost will be retiring at the end of the season. Yost, 65, has managed the Royals since 2010 and led the team to back-to-back World Series appearcnces. They lost to the San Francisco Giants in seven games in 2014 but beat the Mets in 2015 to capture their first World Series championship since 1985.

After winning the World Series, the Royals went 81-81 in 2016, and the team began the process of rebuilding. Yost says his plan to was to help cultivate some the younger players and then turn the reins over to another manager.

"With the development of our young players and our returning veterans, I feel and hope the worst is behind us in this rebuilding phase of our organization," Yost said in a statement released by the Royals. "My plan all along was to get us through the rough times then turn it over to a new manager to bring us the rest of the way. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here as your manager and will never forget the good and hard times we had together as an organization and a fan base. I will never forget the fact that you fans supported us through it all. Kansas City will always have a special place in my heart, and I look forward to rooting the Royals on to their next World Championship very soon."

Yost's record as a manager sits at 1,144–1,238, though he could add a few more wins before the end of the season. Under Yost, the Royals went 22-9 in the postseason which translates to a .710 winning percentage, which is highest amongst all managers who have managed at least 20 postseason games.
