Washington Nationals Win First Ever World Series Championship

World Series - Washington Nationals v Houston Astros - Game Seven

The Washington Nationals are World Series champions for the first time in franchise history after defeating the Houston Astros in game 7 by a score of 6-2. The Nationals are the first team in history to win the World Series by earning every victory on the road.

The Nationals entered the seventh inning trailing by two runs, but Anthony Rendon hit a solo home run to cut the deficit in half. After Juan Soto drew a walk, Howie Kendrick ripped a home run off the foul pole to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead. They tacked on one more run in the eighth, and then put the game out reach with a pair of runs in the ninth.

Patrick Corbin picked up the win after pitching three innings in relief of Max Scherzer, who gutted out five solid innings after receiving a cortisone injection in his neck.

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg was named the MVP of the series. He won both Games 2 and 6, and became the first pitcher to finish a postseason with a 5-0 record. In 36 1/3 innings he had a 1.98 ERA, 47 strikeouts and just four walks.
