The Happenings of Farmer Renner: One Weekend In October

It was a warm and cheery fall weekend. Summer had given us one last stand against the brisk and blustery fall that approaches us all. Despite the enjoyable weather, I was just as busy as ever. The weekend kicked off as any other weekend does, on the farm. After an alarm clock, a piping hot cup of coffee, and a smile in the mirror, I hopped in my 2008 edge and took my usual commute to the farm. We had just finished combining soy beans so I was tasked with the ever so pleasant job of power washing all of our equipment. Cool morning air hung around till 10:30 AM until temperatures reached the 70’s. By this time I had taken off my jacket and really put my nose to the grindstone, cleaning every square inch of a dual track john deere tractor.

By the time I had finished my work, I felt tired yet accomplished. There is nothing quite like working hard in the morning to get yourself in the right mindset for the rest of the day! Nevertheless, I still had work to do, so I hopped in my ever so faithful car and zoomed back to the radio station for my favorite part of the day. Except my two amazing co-hosts weren't with me. I just so happened to forget that on Friday the 21st, Sean and Heather were doing radio remotely from Hy-Vee! I was bummed out because I missed them, but that didn’t stop me from getting after it and making the most out of a Freaky Football Friday.

Just like any other Friday, all three of us killed it and delivered Marconi Award deserving radio. Our topic of the day was our top five favorite mixed drinks, it was a lovely conversation. However, much to Heather and Sean's dismay, there was some controversy around my pronunciation of the word “Sake.” But besides that, the whole three hours were riveting and highly enjoyable.

I finished my Friday with a trip to Des Moines Lincoln’s football stadium to report on the sidelines. Despite the final score being 54-10 with Ankeny absolutely blowing the socks off of the Railsplitters, I had an enjoyable evening underneath the lights and on the sidelines. When it was all said and done, I tucked myself in bed and got some much needed sleep.

Saturday was not, by any means whatsoever, any less busy. The day immediately kicked off with a cup of coffee and a short drive to the nearest target in Clive. With some extra money set aside, I happily purchased a rowing machine for 200$. In my humble opinion, it was a wise investment. After setting up the rowing machine in my moderately sized studio apartment, I decided to give it a spin. WHEW, it was a great workout, however I was spent by the end.

After my intense, full-body, rowing machine workout, I swung over to the West Des Moines Wombats game. There I met some new friends! Ryan and Nico are both rugby players and were great people to meet and talk to. The Wombats won in exciting fashion with a score of 24-17 over the Rochester Rogues.

Around 6:45 that afternoon, my beloved co-host Heather Burnside, picked me up from my apartment for a special event that afternoon. We both attended a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. The event was called “Unmasking the Singer.” It was clearly a play on the hit series from Fox, “Masked Singer.” But it was wildly entertaining all the same. Both Heather and I got an all access pass to the backstage where we saw some of our law enforcement friends and even 5-0! He had the ever so important task of dancing in a cubby’s mascot uniform. After some laughs, Busch Lights, and handshakes, all three of us went to The Station (a bar and grill on Ingersoll). I had some delicious wings. By the time I had eaten my fill, I was absolutely exhausted.

Heather and Paul dropped me off at my apartment and I slowly crawled into my bed, passing out instantly. It was a day well spent, and filled with memories. And the best part of it all was that I got to sleep in on Sunday morning. So to wrap up my weekend, I took some time to relax, watch football, and reflect on the craziness of life. Sometimes it feels good to stop and look around. Life moves quickly, and if you don’t stop to take it all in, you might miss it!
